Cupping

You can often recognize when someone has had cupping by the red circular marks on their arms or body. Cupping is an alternative therapy that has been around for centuries, even though it’s certainly trendy these days. This ancient form of healing is designed to help ease bodily pains and discomfort through special cups that are placed on the skin. Here at Sports & Spinal Wellness Center, our chiropractors are dedicated to providing a wide range of therapeutic, holistic treatment options to help you feel better and perform at your best.

What is Cupping?

Cupping works by pulling the fascia, or tissue, away from the skeleton. As the suction of the cup against the skin creates pressure, the classic red marks start to form. It’s believed that cupping pulls elements including toxins to the surface of the body, where the body’s lymphatic system can properly drain it. In essence, cupping stimulates the body’s natural healing response. The cups are also heated before being applied to the skin, as the heat helps to activate the cups.

Who can Benefit from Cupping?

You might see a lot of athletes and even A-list celebrities showing off their red cupping marks, but the truth is, anyone can benefit from cupping. Many athletes turn to cupping between competitions to help speed up the body’s natural healing processes to help with their recovery. It can also help reduce tension in the body, reducing knots and other areas of tight, sore, and painful tissue. Cupping can be seen as a preventive treatment as well as a treatment option for people dealing with a wide range of injuries, disorders, and symptoms including,

  • Lung disease
  • Asthma
  • Chronic fatigue syndrome
  • Chronic pain (e.g. sciatica; muscle tension; migraines)
